A new space race for better internet in Australia.
If you live in a regional, rural, or remote area of Australia, you’ve probably heard Starlink the low-orbit satellite internet service from SpaceX that’s been giving country homes and businesses access to high-speed broadband. But there’s a new player getting ready to join the game; Project Kuiper, Amazon’s upcoming satellite internet network. It’s already being called Starlink’s biggest challenger, and it could mean more choice and better internet options for Australians outside the cities.
Here’s what you need to know.
Project Kuiper (pronounced Ky-per) is Amazon’s plan to build a huge network of more than 3,000 low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites that can deliver fast, reliable internet anywhere on the planet especially to areas that traditional NBN, fibre, or mobile networks can’t easily reach.
Because these satellites orbit much closer to Earth than traditional ones, Kuiper promises lower latency (less lag) and faster speeds, making it suitable for streaming, video calls, online gaming, and business use.
Amazon has also designed new compact satellite dishes (user terminals) that are smaller and more affordable than many older systems which could make installations easier and cheaper for everyday households.

Amazon launched its first batch of Kuiper satellites in 2025 and plans to begin a limited service rollout by late 2025 or early 2026. In Australia, Amazon has partnered with NBN Co to bring Kuiper satellite broadband to regional, rural, and remote communities from mid-2026. So, while it’s not available just yet, it’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
Starlink has a big head start with over 6,000 satellites already in orbit and thousands of customers across Australia. But Kuiper is bringing serious competition.
Here’s how they stack up:
| Feature | Starlink | Project Kuiper |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Space X (Elon Musk) | Amazon (Jeff Bezos) |
| Status | Already available in Australia | Launching 2026 |
| Satellites Planned | 12,000+ | 3,200+ |
| Speed | 50-250 Mbps typical | Early tests over 2 Gbps |
| Hardware | Compact dish with power supply | Even smaller, low-cost designs planned |
| Target Users | Rural, remote, mobile users | Rural, remote, underserved regions |
At Jim’s Antennas, we keep a close eye on emerging technologies like Kuiper, because they directly impact how Australians connect, stream, and work from home especially in regional areas.
If you’re already using Starlink or planning to upgrade your internet in the next year, our local team can help with site assessments, installations, Wi-Fi setup, and antenna mounting, whether it’s Starlink now or Kuiper in the near future.
Amazon’s Project Kuiper is gearing up to be a major competitor to Starlink, with fast, reliable satellite broadband aimed squarely at regional Australia.
While it won’t launch here until 2026, it’s an exciting development for anyone who’s struggled with slow or unreliable internet and a reminder that satellite broadband is rapidly becoming a real alternative to traditional connections.
Jim’s Antennas will be ready to help you make the switch or upgrade when it arrives.
Whether it’s Starlink, NBN satellite, or future Kuiper installations, your local Jim’s Antennas technician can help get you connected and keep your Wi-Fi running smoothly.
