The Implementation of COVID-19 Temperature Screening Technology Across Australian Businesses

Across Australia, several industries are implementing temperature checking measures to quickly identify whether customers or employees are ill. In response to heightened demand, Jim’s Antennas and Jim’s Security have recently partnered with Acsess Health to develop a Temperature Check Station that is particularly affordable for small business.

As normal life begins to resume, an increased number of people are expected to be out and about in public spaces, and under the guidelines of easing restrictions, customers and employees are now slowly trickling back into the workplace.

Despite our gradual return to normalcy and strict social distancing measures, the threat of coming into contact with someone infected with COVID-19 unfortunately still remains.

However, the introduction of thermal imaging cameras across the country seeks to mitigate this risk by screening temperature as a way of monitoring entry into enclosed public spaces.

Originally developed during the 2003 SARS epidemic, thermal fever screening systems work by measuring infrared energy emitted by exposed skin to produce a heat map. This map then allows the system to detect whether a person’s temperature is within a safe range.

Conditional entry based on these measures has been commonplace for airports and railway stations across Asia for sometime now.

But, within Australia the use of temperature scanning technology is relatively new. Health-care providers such as hospitals and nursing homes and high traffic hubs like airports and shopping centres, have been some of the first industries to introduce these measures.

However, despite being a recent initiative, temperature scanning is expected to become the new-norm.

This high in-demand technology, comes at a pretty penny, with popular brands such as Dahua and Hikvision charging around +$20,000 for a thermal camera and blackbody package suitable for fever screening. These products are capable of measuring the temperature for high volumes of people and are better suited to airports or train stations.

While some large businesses and industries may be easily able to afford these costs – what will happen to small businesses who can’t? Will your local cafes, dentist or clothes shop be left behind?

The Jim’s and Acsess Health Temperature Check Station provides a solution that is affordable, effective and suitable for both large and small business. Making these imperative preventative measures accessible to a broader sector.

Retailing at $2,800, our new thermal imaging temperature terminal works by combining Artificial Intelligence technology to analyse thermal imaging detected by infra-red radiation, and can capture a person’s face temperature even if they are a wearing a face mask.

With fast non-contact measurement and an accuracy of +- 0.3 degrees this device makes protection simple by detecting elevated body temperatures associated with COVID-19, The Flu and Gastro within 100ms.

The terminal also boasts a wide range of features, such as:

  • Integration with door access control system
  • Non-contact automatic temperature measurement
  • Stranger warning and blacklist management
  • Proof of identity for staff
  • Audit stream

When a temperature reading exceeds a safe threshold, the signal light on the terminal will send out an abnormal warning and initiate a voice alert. However, this technology can also be installed at the front door of a business, where keypads are located. Until someone is verified and their temperature is deemed safe, the keypads will not operate, denying them access into the facility.

The terminal also has a number of additional uses, for example staff can use facial recognition to sign in and sign out of their work attendance each day.

Anna Jablonka from VMCH Corpus Aged Care has found that that the implementation of this device has “cut down manual processes, and that staff find it very quick and easy to use”.

Whether you’re a dentist, a café, real estate agent, local shop or anything in between, the Temperature Station will help ensure that anyone entering your premises has a normal body temperature. A solution that will protect the safety of both your staff and customers, as well that of your business.
