Melbourne: The Next Frontier for Channel 7’s SD (MPEG-2) Shutdown
While Channel 7 has already shut down its MPEG-2 standard-definition broadcasts in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and will do so in Sydney from 7 October 2025, Melbourne remains the last major capital yet to receive an official shutdown date .
What’s Going On?
Channel 7 is transitioning from older MPEG-2 encoding (used for SD / standard definition broadcasts) to MPEG-4 HD across its metropolitan and regional markets.
- Brisbane / Gold Coast: The shutdown of MPEG-2 occurred on 9 July 2025.
- Perth: The changeover was around 1 May 2025.
- Adelaide: The shutdown took place on 5 February 2025.
- Sydney: Will follow on 7 October 2025.
Melbourne, however, hasn’t yet had a firm date confirmed, though industry watchers expect it will occur later in 2025, making Melbourne the final metro market to make the switch.
Seven’s own transmission documentation hints that many newer devices (TVs, set-top boxes, PVRs) sold since about 2009 already include MPEG-4 (version 10) support, though older equipment may not.
Why the Switch (and Why Melbourne is Part of It)
- Efficiency gains: MPEG-4 offers more compression efficiency, allowing broadcasters to deliver higher-quality HD content using bandwidth more effectively.
- Better picture & service quality: Moving fully to MPEG-4 enables improvements in video clarity, fewer artifacts, and more room for multi-channels or additional services.
- Spectrum reallocation: By removing redundant MPEG-2 streams, broadcasters can free up spectrum capacity for future uses or enhancements.
Because the network has already rolled out these changes in other capitals, Melbourne is logically the final metro leg remaining in this transition.
What Melbourne Needs to Know (and Do)
Even though the exact date hasn’t been locked in yet, you can prepare ahead of time to avoid losing access when the shutdown does occur.
1. Check if your gear supports MPEG-4 / HD
- Tune to Channel 70 (7HD) or Channel 73 7Mate HD). If they come through clearly, your equipment is probably MPEG-4 compatible.
- Devices manufactured after about 2009, especially those branded “Freeview” or HD-capable, tend to support MPEG-4
- Older TVs or set-top boxes may be limited to MPEG-2 and unable to decode the new format.
2. Be ready to upgrade if necessary
If your current equipment can’t handle MPEG-4:
- Get a more modern TV with built-in MPEG-4 support (which many newer sets already have).
- Or, purchase an HD set-top box (STB) that can decode MPEG-4 and feed the signal to your existing TV.
3. After the switch: rescan / retune your channels
When the shutdown happens:
- Perform an “auto-tune” or “channel scan / rescan” on your TV or STB to pick up the updated HD channels.
- In many cases, modern TVs will detect the changes automatically, but manually re-scanning ensures you don’t miss anything.
4. Streaming alternative: 7 plus
If there is any disruption or your older gear doesn’t handle MPEG-4, you can still access Channel 7 content via its streaming/catch-up platform 7plus (via apps, smart TVs, mobile, etc.).
What to Watch Out For
- No Official Melbourne date yet — keep an eye on announcements from Channel 7 / 7Transmission / Freeview.
- Some older “black box” or legacy PVR / set-top devices may fail entirely after the switch — they might not display video (or may show a blank screen with sound) if they don’t support MPEG-4.
- After the transition, failing to retune may mean missing new channels or misaligned channel numbers.
