Channel 7 SD (MPEG-2) Shutdown in Sydney — What’s Going On?
In 2025, Australia’s free-to-air television landscape continues to evolve. Channel 7 is phasing out its standard-definition (SD) broadcasts using the older MPEG-2 encoding format, migrating fully to MPEG-4 HD transmissions. In Sydney, the SD (MPEG-2) version of Channel 7 is scheduled to be turned off on 7 October 2025.
What’s Changing
Until now, many viewers in Sydney have been able to watch Channel 7 via both the older MPEG-2 SD feed and the newer MPEG-4 HD stream. But as of 7 October, only the MPEG-4 HD stream will remain active—meaning the SD feed will cease altogether.
Channel 7 has already executed similar transitions in other major cities:

How to Be Ready
1. Test compatibility

2. Upgrade if needed
If your TV or set-top box is incompatible, get a newer digital TV or a dedicated MPEG-4 HD set-top box.
3. Retune / Rescan
Once your equipment is updated, run an auto-tune or rescan to catch all the current HD services.

If you’re unsure or want it done reliably, hire a technician to assess your equipment, tune your setup, or install new components like compatible antennas or set-top boxes.
