Rockingham got its name as it was the name of one of 3 vessels that carried settlers to W.A. The 3 vessels were purchased by Thomas Peel and arrived around 1830. The Rockingham was blown ashore and after failed attempts to re float her in shallow waters and eventually sank. Rockingham served as a Timber Port exporting the timbers Jarrah and Sandalwood from Jarrahdale located further inland. This was until the Harbour town of Fremantle grew and Rockingham’s Port services for Timber decreased.
Rockingham is now a significantly populated area offering great seaside living in surrounding suburbs including Safety Bay, Warnbro, Waikiki, Cooloongup and Shoalwater. Windsurfing and Kite surfing are very popular activities in the Golden Bay area as this stretch of land is also known as. To avoid the 45km journey into Perth’s CBD locals to Rockingham can be found employed in Kwinana, Spearwood and Cockburn as these areas offer large construction and heavy industry employment. In addition to these areas large shopping precincts can also be found in Rockingham and The Kwinana Town Centre.
