From Rooftop Reception to 36 Outlets: A Complete MATV Solution
Commercial television systems require much more than simply installing an antenna and connecting a splitter.
This recent project in Kingscliff, NSW involved the installation of a brand-new 36-outlet MATV (Master Antenna Television) system, professionally designed by Matchmaster and installed by our Jim’s Antennas technician.
The complete system incorporated Matchmaster mounting hardware and stainless components, a commercial TV antenna, satellite dish and a purpose-designed headend and distribution system to deliver reliable television signals throughout the property.
What is a Commercial MATV System?
An MATV system allows a single, professionally designed antenna system to distribute television signals to multiple outlets throughout a building.
Rather than installing individual antennas for different areas, the incoming signal is received at a central point, processed and distributed through a carefully designed coaxial network.
For this Kingscliff project, the system needed to service 36 individual TV outlets, making correct system design, signal levels and distribution particularly important.
Designed by Matchmaster, Professionally Installed
For a commercial system of this size, getting the design right from the beginning is critical.
The system was designed by Matchmaster, with the installation using Matchmaster equipment throughout, including the rooftop mounting system, antenna, satellite equipment and headend components.
Matchmaster specialises in commercial TV distribution and provides system design and engineering for applications ranging from MATV through to more complex television distribution networks.
The result is a system designed as a complete network rather than a collection of individual components.
On the Roof: Antenna, Satellite and Stainless Hardware
As you can see from the rooftop photo, both the terrestrial TV antenna and satellite dish form part of the installation.
For a coastal location such as Kingscliff, the quality of the mounting hardware is also an important consideration. Matchmaster mounting and stainless components were used to create a robust, professional installation while providing the reception infrastructure required for the system below.
Correct antenna positioning and installation are particularly important on a commercial MATV system because every outlet downstream ultimately relies on the quality of the signal being received at the source.
Behind the Scenes: The MATV Headend
The second photo shows where much of the real work happens.
The headend and distribution equipment takes the incoming signals and distributes them across the property’s extensive coaxial network.
With 36 outlets to supply, the system needs to account for signal losses through cabling, splitters and taps so that appropriate signal levels are delivered throughout the network, including outlets furthest from the headend.
The installation incorporates commercial-grade Matchmaster/Johansson distribution equipment designed specifically for multi-outlet free-to-air and satellite applications. Matchmaster’s active tap range, for example, provides independent terrestrial and satellite gain controls and is designed for residential MDU and commercial television distribution systems.

As the number of outlets increases, so does the importance of designing the system correctly.
A commercial MATV installation needs to consider signal strength, cable distances, distribution losses, amplification, isolation, future servicing and the overall balance of the network.
Simply adding more splitters isn’t the answer.
