The NBN uses a mix of technologies across Australia. Each connection type offers different speeds and reliability depending on your location.
1. Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
Full fibre to your home. The fastest and most reliable option, with speeds up to 1000 Mbps. Ideal for heavy internet use.
2. Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
Fibre runs to a nearby pit, then copper for the last few metres. Reliable and capable of speeds up to 250 Mbps.

3. Fibre to the Node (FTTN)
Fibre to a street cabinet, then copper to your home. Common, but speeds vary depending on your distance from the node.
4. Fibre to the Building (FTTB)
Used in apartment buildings. Fibre runs to the basement, then existing copper wiring to each unit.
5. Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)
Fibre to your street, then coaxial cable (often from old Pay TV services). Supports fast speeds but can be affected by peak-time congestion.
6. Fixed Wireless
For rural and regional areas. Connects via a signal from a nearby NBN tower. Speeds typically range from 25–75 Mbps.
7. Sky Muster Satellite
For remote areas. A satellite dish provides access with speeds up to 25 Mbps. Higher latency compared to other options.
| Connection Type | Technologgy Used | Typical Speed Range | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTTP | Full fibre | Up to 1000 Mbps+ | Speed & reliability |
| FTTC | Fibre + short copper | Up to 250 Mbps | Balanced performance |
| FTTN | Fibre + long copper | Up to 100 Mbps (varies) | Common but variable |
| FTTB | Fibre to building + copper | Up to 100 Mbps (varies) | Apartments |
| HFC | Fibre + coaxial | Up to 1000 Mbps | Metro areas with Pay TV cable |
| Fixed Wireless | Wireless signal | 25–75 Mbps | Rural & regional |
| Sky Muster Satellite | Satellite | 12–25 Mbps (higher latency) | Remote and outback locations |

By the end of 2025, over 10 million Australian homes will be eligible to upgrade to FTTP.
